Technical Services and How to Identify what you need to create

Are there examples of recommended Technical Services which at a minimum should be present in any CSDM aligned CMDB Service Model? And does it make sense to create Technical Services based on a Technology Business Management (TBM) Service model structure, such as High Level Technical Services called:  Infrastructure as the Technical Service and Service Offerings for things like:  Network, Compute, Storage..etc, another example following TBM Model would be: Platform as the Technical Service and Service Offerings for things like: Data and Application. Does that high level Tech Service modeling make sense, aligned with TBM taxonomy? What is TBM? - TBM Council

Hi ,

Technical Service Offerings is pretty much reflecting your operational model if it comes to manage/support IT solutions.
TBM is a standardized taxonomy model which is kind of common sense if it comes to managing IT.

Meaning TBM can be used in many cases for the management of the IT landscape. But if there is a home taxonomy that can be used as well.

Example of TBM model mapped to Technical Services.

If more granularity is needed then you could also make a Technical Service Portfolio and link the Technical Service into this portfolio.

Hi Barry,
Thank you for a good reply on the good question. Here is thrree more good questions:

Where can I find a good documentation of the supporting services from TBM?

Is there a some kind of "service model" included in TBM? I have been searching and can onlyt find high level text about TBM. I also found a big project involving some swedish govenment agencies investing a lot into getting their financials in line with TBM. I am interested in the connection the money but even more in how a good enough and "best practice" modelling of supporting services.

Are there any good examples of the above in real life? It seems like everybody is struggling with this issue.

Thank you for the good answers provided befor in this community.

Hi Peter,

if it comes to docs, check the links that Tobias posted. (main TBM content is from Apptio)

CSDM mapping to TBM is some specific layers of TBM. TBM on itself is quite a strict taxonomy model, where CSDM Service Portfolios on itself are flexible. For the reason that most of it is common sense (for IT) it can be used for Technical Portfolios and Business Portfolios.

I am not a financial expert about funding neither consuming, but from what I know, the funding part is more towards the Business Capability (strategic) taxonomy.
The consuming part (charging) is more the consuming area.

Where the strategic part needs more maturity it is regularly used with Lean IX or ins-pi (UPM-X). these are integrated solutions/enriched data models.

it more or less depends on the maturity level needed in those areas.

BR,

Barry

The answers focus on TBM, but I think the question was more about "recommended Technical Services". Does anyone want to share their list of Technical Services? (or even just a subset thereof)? Or are there sample lists available anywhere?
Theoretical discussions only go so far. Some examples would be helpful to anyone grappling with Technical Services.
