Hi everyone,
I’m a ServiceNow QA preparing for interviews and want to clearly understand the clone workflow and QA role during upgrades or environment refreshes.
Could anyone share:
- What clone-related questions are usually asked in interviews?
- What key points or responsibilities a QA should know before and after cloning (e.g., validations, exclusions, preserving test data, etc.)?
- Any practical tips from your experience handling clones during upgrades?
Thanks in advance for the insights!

Hi @venky6181 ,
Common Interview Questions: Expect questions like – What is a clone in ServiceNow? What data is excluded during cloning? How do you validate a clone? What precautions do you take before and after cloning?
QA Responsibilities: Before cloning, ensure test data and configurations to be preserved are added to the exclusion list; after cloning, validate integrations, user roles, test cases, and key business processes to confirm the environment is stable.
Validations & Exclusions: Verify cloned data accuracy, scheduled jobs, email configurations, and integrations. Ensure sensitive or environment-specific data (like MID Servers, SMTP, or OAuth credentials) are excluded.
Practical Tips:
Always Export In-Progress Update Sets
Maintain a Target Instance Checklist
Re-enable test users or accounts, validate ACLs and workflows, and coordinate closely with the platform admin to avoid overwriting important QA/test configurations.
Mark this as helpful and correct, if this helps you.
Thanks,
Yaswanth.
