Report on equipment requested by job title

Hi all, for new hires, we use an order guide to collect their name, title, and equipment requested. The equipment requested is separate catalog items for a laptop, mouse, etc. We've been using this method for about a year and now want to report on the equipment requested by the job title. I've looked at a few ways to collect this information, such as reporting, predictive intelligence, and database views but I'm struggling to get them to show the correct info, so I wanted to ask what the best way to accomplish this is.

For reporting, I've selected the below parameters but it doesn't return any results, presumably because some connection (or lack of) between the order guide and the requested items.

I kept working on this and came up with a way to do it. More background would probably be useful though.

In our environment, all items that can be ordered from our order guide have the variable set of 'Hire Info'. 'Hire Info' includes job title, among other variables, so my need was to report on the 'Hire Info' variable set variable 'Job title'. AFAIK, when starting a report from the Report module, you cannot group by variables from variable sets.

Another issue is that when grouping by a variable, you have to select a specific item on which the variable appears. There is a way around this though, by starting with a list view instead of a report.  The reason this works is that it bypasses the need to pick an item! This can be seen with the filters on a list view, below. Note that 'Select Item' is blank.

Here are the steps I took for this process:

  1. Follow these steps and add your variable to a list view. Big thanks to @Bradford Shelle for this info!
  2. Navigate to the list view of the table and select the list modified in step 1.
  3. Apply any filters/column changes.
  4. On the column that you wish to group by in a report, right-click and click 'Bar Chart'.DylanB_0-1722452481550.png
  5. You will then have a report reporting on a variable set variable with no item selected!DylanB_2-1722453482243.png

What table is your report based on? If you change report type to List and use the same filter conditions, do you get any records displayed?
