The search functionality and behavior of Knowledge Articles menu in Agent Assist

Can you help me understand how the Knowledge Articles in Agent Assist work when searching for relevant information? Specifically, does it search through all published knowledge articles to find data matching the input?
For example, when I search for “Spyware,” I only get 3 results
but searching for “*Spyware” returns more results.
Why does this happen, and how exactly does the search mechanism work through the Agent assist - Knowledge Articles? Can we always force it to search and display the result like with the * (wildcards)?
