Introduction

The way we automate tasks in enterprise software is evolving fast. With the Yokohama release, ServiceNow has introduced AI Agent Studio, a game-changing feature that enables developers to build autonomous workflows powered by Generative AI and Now Assist.

So, what exactly are AI Agents, and how can they transform the way we work?

What Are AI Agents?

AI Agents in ServiceNow go beyond traditional workflow automation. Instead of following rigid, predefined steps, they dynamically assess situations, make decisions, and execute actions with minimal human intervention.

Key Features of AI Agents

AI Orchestrator – Uses chain-of-thought reasoning to plan and execute multi-step processes
Built-in & Customizable Agents – ServiceNow provides out-of-the-box AI Agents, but you can also build your own
Integration with Now Assist & Other Tools – Leverage Flow Designer, Virtual Agent, AI Search, and even REST APIs to interact with external systems
Governance & Control – Built-in monitoring, analytics, and security features

Live Demo: AI Agents in Action

In our latest Creator Toolbox episode, we got a firsthand look at how AI Agents can be used to:

Resolve IT incidents by pulling in historical data, summarizing context, and suggesting actions
Manage expenses by fetching and categorizing reports dynamically
Execute ServiceNow workflows with natural language prompts

With low-code/no-code configuration, developers can create AI-driven workflows without complex scripting.

How to Get Started with AI Agents

🔹 Prerequisites:

  • Requires Now Assist Pro+ or Enterprise+ license
  • Needs Yokohama Patch 1 or Zanadu Patch S
  • Install the AI Agent Store App
  • Ensure AI Search is enabled

🔹 Setup Steps:
1️⃣ Enable Now Assist Panel in the Admin Console
2️⃣ Assign AI Agent admin role (sn_ai.admin)
3️⃣ Build your first AI Agent using the AI Agent Studio

Best Practices for AI Agents

💡 Start Small: Avoid overloading a single AI Agent with too many tools (stick to 5-7 per agent).
💡 Use AI Search Wisely: Optimize knowledge base data for better AI-generated results.
💡 Monitor Performance: Use analytics dashboards to track AI Agent usage and effectiveness.

What’s Next? The Future of AI Agents

AI Agent Studio is just getting started! In upcoming releases, we can expect:
🚀 AI Agents integrated with Virtual Agent for end-user interactions
🚀 More pre-built AI Agents for ITSM, HR, and customer workflows
🚀 Improved analytics and governance tools for tracking AI Agent performance
