Adding a field to a Knowledge Article template

I have seen knowledge article templates that have a box that can be added that asks:
"Is this article to replace an existing KB"
And there is a field that you can search for the existing KB#. So when the new KB is published, it will retire the old one instantly, and any existing permalinks to the old KB will automatically be rerouted to the new one being published.
Does anyone know how to do that setup? I do not have permissions to the forms, I do have access to create the article templates though. Is there an option in the "developers" side that offers that box on the form, or does it have to be customized to work that way?
Any assistance towards this question, is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.
