Becoming Proficient

Hello,

As I'm current going through the Now Learning for Developers I'm truly enjoying learning about ServiceNow.  However, as a developer that has primarily worked with RPA development I curious as to how long it takes to really become proficient as a ServiceNow Developer.  I'm going to get my developer certification, but how much work experience does it normally take before you stop having to ask questions all of the time.

Thank you in advance,

Kate

Hi, timeline to proficiency will be a mix of skillset, exposure to the platform and the experience (and common sense) that you initially bring into the role; As the difference between being able to write code and being able to develop solutions that are suited to the ServiceNow platform can be very subtle, also proficiency is subject to interpretation.

As a ballpark guess, depending on platform exposure during your initial ServiceNow journey, I would think 2-3 years' experience should make you proficient.

As for questions, this year I will have been working with ServiceNow for 15 years (in 1 role or other) and I am still constantly asking questions; the major differences between now and when I started is that now I normally know the question(s) I need answered, normally (not always) understand the context of the answer, and can often find the answer myself.

Luckily for us all, the NowCommunity is a great place to ask questions, and also to find answers for questions that you didn't know you needed to ask.

Best of luck with your ServiceNow journey,

I think the answer to this question depends on the person, their prior experience, and how fast they learn. In my experience it takes a few years to have solid fundamentals on the platform and gain relevant exposure to different modules.

One thing I would add: I think it is more important to reach a point where you know how to find answers. You will always have questions, but experienced developers can lean on what they've learned to find the answer faster and implement best practice solutions.
