Content Item: Open in same window/tab

I have a requirement to use Content Items as subcategory links within the Service Portal. When a user clicks on the content item, I want the SC Categories widget to dynamically update and the category to open, whereas currently it just opens this in a new tab.

The content item is configured as follows:

I have also attempted updating the SC Category Page so that the target field is updated as per guidance here, however this has not worked. Is there any solution for this which does not require a lot of customisation?
