Custom fields/attributes for a Catalog Item

We have a custom glossary for catalog items. I was hoping to achieve this by

a. Adding custom attributes to a Catalog Item Template, or,

b. Adding custom fields/attributes to a Catalog Item

I am not able to find a way to implement either approach. I would appreciate any pointers.

Found my answer. You have to extend sc_cat_item
