Custom sys-popup view for (portal) catalog item reference variables

Is it possible to apply a custom sys_popup view to a reference field that is being used on a catalog item variable?

on 1 table there can be only 1 sys_popup view and it will impact everywhere this table is being referred in catalog and the normal form as well.
