I can influence the columns on reference popup lists.
Does not work on workspace however, at least not always.
Any idea?

If it works sometimes, it might be a workspace cache thing. Workspace stores a ton of cached data that affects the view as well from what I've seen.
Have you tried clearing all cache, include browser and instance, and logged out and back in?
