Error "You do not have sufficient privileges to access this knowledge item"

In our PROD environment, when any user (with any role or no roles) clicks on a KB article in the Featured Content widget on the Employee Center they get the error "You do not have sufficient privileges to access this knowledge item". Same error with the "Most Viewed" widget. If the same itil user opens the same article from the platform it works fine. All KBs in prod, including the Employee Center KB that contains the featured content, have Can Read set to All itil users and All users.
I just finished setting up the Featured Content icon in test, and I can open the articles there without error. As an admin or as an end-user (no roles)
