Is approval_admin role required to perform approvals

Is approval_admin role required to perform approvals, or can we give new ACL's that can say if the user is the Approver of the Approval Request, they can have access to the form to read/edit/approve. As per the OOB there is a inbound notification that process the approvals does that also need/check that the user needs approval_admin access

No, they don't need to have approval_admin role.

Approval_admin role is for approval admin only. That role allows person to approve, cancel, etc
