Table field in Number Maintenance( sys_number) table is text field. While I checked it in OOB instance it is a reference field with all table names.I am facing some issue in number prefix in my instance and I am guessing it is because of this. Could someone help me out with the reason?

I'd go to the dictionary list view and see who last modified the sys_number category field. If its anyone but system, and that person is in arm's reach, put their head in a vice and find out why they'd do such a thing.

And it could be just a really old instance that was not updated/upgraded properly. I've seen that happen in past.

Not sure to be honest. It was meant more as a general warning as upgrades are not quite 100%, especially with older ones.
