I am interested in buying service now but I need to know the minimum version of Java needed to run on a Desktop. Does anyone know?

The MID server as component for integrations and discovery will indeed require a java environment. However, ServiceNow does include the required package in the installation itself.

About upgrade: The MID server is usually setup to auto-upgrade. As long as your corporate policies allow this this will mean that the MID will always match the version of your ServiceNow instance automatically. Therefor almost no maintenance is required by your local server admin - besides the usual checking for disk spaces, error handling etc.

Maybe to clarify a bit more, you will not be able to run the ServiceNow platform on your laptop. ServiceNow comes as a SaaS offer and we will host your instance in one of our data centers. You can register at https://developer.servicenow.com to get your own instance for development type activities.
