One organisation I know maps of its applications to application owners, and creates rankings in terms of  business criticality for each application; this information is then stored in the CMDB. Does anyone see this as a useful exercise, if so in what way?

Greetings @Andii. Not sure if you are still looking for a response on your question. Are these Business Application records [cmdb_ci_business_app]? If so, I can't imagine that having a single ranking score would be beneficial as Business Applications are categorized in a number of different ways and it would be near impossible to have a true apples-to-apples comparison. I also don't see a "Rank" field out-of-the-box. Is this a custom field that was created? If these are Business Applications, I'd recommend looking at the Enterprise Architecture module and the Enterprise Architecture Workspace. You can create Application Assessments with a more holistic approach when comparing applications. After you have generated Application Assessments, assign them to the proper audience, and wait for scores, you can then go to EA Workspace and look at the Bubble chart for a better visualization for comparison. I'll include some links below if it helps!
