Anyone who uses Enterprise Architecture Workspace and specifically the Business Portfolio know of a way in which we can export the 'Business capabilities hierarchy' to excel while preserving the tiered structure?
Use case is to send a spreadsheet to Business Owners and IT Application Owners so they can see the list of the business applications they own and their capabilities, plus the parent's capability and its parent capability.
Essentially, looking for an expandable list view like the hierarchy visualization does without having to export to Excel and then Use Excel’s Data > Grouping & Outline feature to indent child capabilities under parents.
Imagine a tree_picker=true but in a ServiceNow table with the ability to drill down three levels or perhaps a database view with the three tables (cmdb_ci_business_app, business_capability and cmdb_rel_ci).
Someone out there must have already thought of a way this can be done?

This was exactly what was needed to solve this issue. Way to go. Nice technical approach and documentation.

No need to do an excel exercise first since EA Workspace Business Portfolio, currently includes the full business capability hierarchy, inclusive of all business applications and business services associated with the business capabilities. and while PowerBI is a possible approach, it would meet the goal for the users to attest to the business capability relationships. Thus, the notion of exporting to excel.

Without spread sheet exercise , the IT App owners, business owners will have access in ServiceNow to update the business capability in the workspace directly? The app owners will tie the apps to capabilities in the workspace.?
Could you please elaborate.

I agree. It makes me itch when I see a use case for exporting to an MS app to view data that people should already be able to access - after all, they will be named stakeholders in each Business Application. Integrate it with another tool if you need to send the data somewhere else by all means but surely we're past exporting to Excel in 2025?

I think this touches on another more fundamental issue with how we present Business Capabilities (or any hierarchical records in EA and wider ServiceNow)
When selecting a parent Business Capability or Business Application for a record, today you only see the record name itself without context, when you have a situation where you have thousands of Business Capabilities or Business Applications it becomes near impossible to always accurately select the right records.
It would be good in selection fields and potentially as a computed value we could present the full path of records we are selecting, providing the clear context of what you are selecting.
ie
L0 Business Capability / L1 Business Capability / L2 Business Capability / .. /
or
L0 Business Capability / L1 Business Capability / L2 Business Capability / .. / Business Application
It's been one of the bigger bug bears that hinder its usage in my organisation, as we have a lot of in-house developed applications, sometimes with obscure names that without the context of what it does is challenging
would be a great add

I also submitted this Idea: Business Capability Map Flexible Canvas. You could upvote it if it helps.
