BCM - which element definitions do you use?

Hi there,

We are configuring the BCM-application and learning how to use it given our context. I am a bit curious about how other organizations are using the element definitions for some types of resources.

A process can be dependent on more resources than those which are typically found in SN. For instance, most processess need functioning electricity, heating, transportation etc. Do you create new table(s) for these kind of resources? Or do you add a dependency to the vendor that delivers the service (for instance, electricity)? And of course, sometimes there is no vendor but an internal resource.

So - anyone willing to share? 🙂

Hi Per Ahlstrom,

I have worked with BCM implementations where these assets are tracked under Facility Hardware (cmdb_ci_facility_hardware), which is used to tag a business process in a BIA.

Have you explored using this CI class?

Thanks,
Aswin

Business process and the business applications that support them are the big ones. For Crisis planning locations and employees can be more relevant

Thanks Aswin and Edan for your replies - both are helpful. I realize spending some time with the information regarding which tables exist in CMDB can be helpful CMDB tables descriptions (servicenow.com). And when starting using the BCM-application decide on how to add CI:s to different tables. So an approach is chosen that makes it possible to maintain data quality in these different tables.

Even we have implemented BCM very recently, it depends on what level of dependency you would like to implement which depends on

  • BCM business requirements or the scope which define level of dependency they would like to implement impact analysis and continuity initially
  • Your CMDB maturity level, do you have all required CIs available in CMDB? are are they well mapped to each other?

We did initial analysis of our CMDB and we agreed to define BCM scope for high level class like business applications and server level,  Business capability, business process and business application level for implementation phase 1.

As out CMDB matures, we would like to expand BCM element definition scope accordingly which is ongoing process.
