Mobile Devices - Serial Number Population?

All,

Our organization is beginning to look at Asset Management. We don't currently have HAM PRO  just base Asset. That said we are considering getting HAM PRO in the future.

While we are looking into Asset Management some different areas of concern have been identified one of which is Mobile Devices. At this time our Mobile Devices live in another application but the hope is to get them moved into ServiceNow.

So we are looking to import close to 8k CI's / Assets. Most of which are either Cellular phones or  tablets. We have IMEI numbers on almost all of these devices, we have MSN's on about 7k of them. We are trying to decide which MSN or IMEI should represent the serial number field. Everyone seems to have a different opinion, but at the end of the day we want to do what would be best practice for Mobile Devices, as well as what positions us best for when we eventually get HAM PRO.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Hello @Scott Braden ,

Please find below detailed description of your use case:

  1. Use IMEI for Mobile Phones:

    • The IMEI number should be used in the serial number field for cellular phones due to its uniqueness and standardization across different manufacturers and regions. This will help ensure consistency and reliability in tracking these assets.
  2. Use MSN for Tablets:

    • If tablets do not have an IMEI, use their MSN as an alternative unique identifier.
  3. Flexibility for HAM PRO:

    • Using IMEIs where possible positions you well for transitioning to HAM PRO later on, as this system leverages industry-standard identifiers.
  4. Data Fields Configuration:

    • Ensure both IMEI and MSN are captured in separate fields within ServiceNow so that you retain all available data about each asset.
