The introduction of the document is too vague to understand the specific usage of compatible model and substitute model.

I hope to receive your help.

Hello @lzj ,

I hope this will make your understanding more clear regarding compatible and substitute model.
Compatible is basically can be replaced and substitute as the name suggest alternative to another CI.

Please find all the details below :
In ServiceNow, compatible and substitute models are used in Configuration Management Database (CMDB) to represent relationships between configuration items (CIs).

A compatible model is a type of CI that can be used as a replacement for another CI. For example, if you have a server that fails, you may be able to replace it with another server that has the same specifications and is considered compatible. Compatible models help identify which CIs can be swapped out or replaced with minimal impact on the overall system.

A substitute model is a type of CI that can be used as an alternative to another CI. For example, if you have a software application that requires a specific version of an operating system, but that version is no longer available, you may use a substitute model instead. Substitute models help identify which CIs can be used as alternatives when the original CI is not available or feasible.

To use compatible and substitute models in ServiceNow CMDB:

1. Define the types of CIs that will use these models by creating corresponding Configuration Item [cmdb_ci] tables.

2. Create fields on each CI table to track compatible and substitute models.

3. Populate these fields with values based on the relationships between CIs.

4. Use this information to create reports and dashboards showing which CIs are compatible or substitutable with others in your environment.

5. Use this data to make informed decisions about replacing or substituting CIs in order to minimize disruption or downtime.

Keep in mind that proper configuration management practices require ongoing maintenance and updates as your environment changes over time.
