Has anyone implemented a 3 or 4 tier HR Taxonomy? The OOTB is just 2 tiers. Interested in the pros and cons of adding a layer.

Any taxonomy experts out there willing to discuss the merits of having more than 2 tiers in their categories?   For example, in HR we would like to have a topic page for benefits and possibly one for insurance with all of the options for insurance.  Therefore, our taxonomy would look something like this:

Benefits>Insurance>Dental

Benefits>Insurance>Disability

Benefits>Insurance>Life

Benefits>Insurance>Medical

Benefits>Insurance>Vision

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide.

Nothing prevents a fourth (or more) sub-topcs in your taxonomy. The limitations I can think of are:

  1. The mega menu will only show three levels
  2. The topic page only shows the next level down sub-topics

What this means is if HR is the top-level parent, the mega menu will only show HR > Benefits > Insurance

Then, when the user selects Benefits, only the Insurance topic will show in the Subtopic widget.

The user would have to click into the Insurance topic to see the fourth-level topics.

Lots of clicks, imo.

Good luck!
