Knowledge attachment link function not working properly

I'm creating knowledge in a test environment, and I learned through a training that the Attachment Link button is supposed to " automatically download attachments when the User opens the Knowledge Article. This is commonly used for Articles that contain information in attachments instead of in the Article body." However, when I check this box, the results are:

- the text field is required before submitting the new knowledge

- the portal article does not show the required text from the new knowledge configuration screen

- the portal article shows "View or Download the Attachments Below" with a link to the article.

- when trying to open the knowledge article from the case view, the document opens when I click the link and does not allow me to go into the screen to view/edit the knowledge (which is what I hope would happen from the portal view)

Base on the quote I have above, I believe that when I click the knowledge article in the portal, the link should automatically download and not required the user to click the link to open the file?

Hi,

Sadly what you reading is not how it behaves within the Service Portal (sp). It behaves like you are saying when it comes through the "old" knowledge which you can reach through the normal UI. From there when you click it will actually just hit download directly, just like it describes in the docs.

Now, there is also a portal version that works just like that and that it knowledge own portal (kb). To get to that you will need to activate the plugin "Knowledge - portal" (I think it's named that). From there you will get a totally different better layout in my eyes and also the same functionality as you would espect reading the docs. I haven't sadly seen that behavior or look in the OOB version of knowledge in the normal portals thou, which is sad. I haven't yet tried to move that kind of functionality over to the portal but shouldn't be that hard to do.

I believe what @Goran WitchDoc is saying is that the "Attachment link" checkbox applies only to the regular old Platform UI, not to the Service Portal or Employee Center.  What I experienced when using this flag was as follows.  Clicking on the knowledge article STILL did not directly download an attachment.  It actually opened a preview window (popup dialog) with the option to download.
