Discovery without SNMP credentials - workaround & possible solutions.

Greetings dear community,

I am quite new to Discovery, and I've already ran into a tricky challenge.

My client's third-party provider refuses to share their SNMP credentials, required for fulfilling the Discovery project.

Though I have done some research on vary alternatives that may help them overcome this hinderance, I would also like to ask you if you ever found yourself in this kind of situation.

What may be the best approach to overcome this challenge?

What other tools/procedures could synergize with the SN system to populate the CMDB with the required data?
Regarding the SN capabilities, is the Agent Client Collector suitable product for this kind on endeavor?

Thank you,

Have a nice one!

Hi,

You can try Credential-less Discovery but it has its limits.

https://docs.servicenow.com/bundle/tokyo-it-operations-management/page/product/discovery/concept/nma...

Having credentials is a vital part of Discovery. Even with the Agent base approach you will need credentials for the agent to be installed and querying the hosts. This is for Servers only, so not really a replacement for snmp discovery.

When it comes to the Provider not willing to share credentials... the question here is who owns the devices? If they own them, then I understand why they will not let you have credentials to access their devices. If your client is owning the devices and the third part is managing them, then I would say that Client should "call the shots" and own the credentials as well. It all comes down to what service they are providing to your client.

Niklas
