How can I delete Categories from Knowledge Base?

I have so many obsolete categories in our knowledge base, but when I go to: Knowledge Bases > I select our Knowledge Base > I scroll down and click the Knowledge Categories Tab > I click on the checkbox for a particular category > Scroll down, click drop down: Action on selected rows > The delete button is greyed out.

I have some with a dependency and some without. I can't delete about 25 of my 32 categories. How can this be achieved?

Thanks

Corina

We had this issue after someone went rampant and created a mountain of junk categories.

I believe the official stance is "the categories don't appear while viewing the KB if there's no articles there", but the categories still haunt contributors. Especially if someone's been including profanities or unsavoury language.

There's a Delete ACL for kb_category where "Admin Overrides" is not ticked. Should just need to update that ACL, and then admins can delete categories.

Be careful, and do not break category "chains"! Otherwise you'll end up with orphaned categories without parents, and some unpredictable behaviour when viewing the knowledge base.

This was the answer. Thank you!

This was the ACL I ticked "admin overrides" to access the category deletion:

[instance].com/nav_to.do?uri=sys_security_acl.do?sys_id=823c65e0d702210013ab49547e610387

You can always mark the category as Inactive. When you're viewing the categories for the knowledge base, click on the gear symbol and make sure the Active column is showing. Then you can just set the unneeded categories to inactive.
