How does the ACC agent match to a host?

Hey guys,

My team is trying to PoC the Agent Client Collector, and have run into a bit of a problem. We have the proper modules installed, everything setup and the agent installed on 3 Windows laptops. 2 laptops are full remote, and 1 is mostly in office. For the in office laptop, the host is always correct. For the 2 remote laptops, the host starts out correct, but somehow updates to an incorrect host over the course of a day or so. If we click the "Collect host data" button, they will correct themselves, but only until whatever is running once again runs. My question is, what magic is happening that could cause the system to get confused? The hosts that are being incorrectly associated don't have the agent installed. Appreciate any insight the community might have. Thanks!!

Hi Morgan,

Firstly, it is not recommended approach to use a laptop machine for the ACC.

The host starts out correct, but somehow updates to an incorrect host over the course of a day or so:

  • Have you checked with the windows team if any local policy updates the hostname?
  • Is it happening after a reboot of the machine? or without?

For information: supported operating systems

  • Ensure that you are installing Agent Client Collector on one of the supported operating systems:
    • Windows Server 2012 (must be a user other than administrator)
    • Windows Server 2016
    • Windows Server 2019
    • Linux
      • CentOS 6
      • CentOS 7
Note: Amazon Linux AMIs are currently not supported.

      • Debian 9
      • Debian 10
      • SUSE 12

      • Ubuntu 16.04
      • Ubuntu 18
      • Ubuntu 20

All supported operating systems work with the x86-64 CPU architecture type.

Hope it helps.

Thanks,

Raj

Raj,

Can you let us know what makes you believe that laptops or endpoints are not supported/recommended?

Thanks,

-Ryan

Hi Ryan,

As per the document Agent Client Collector.

As it mentioned supported operating systems.

Let me know if that is something i am missing, that helps me to learn 🙂

Thanks,

Raj

that is a Paris link, very old and also prior to when ACC-V was supported (Quebec P3 was the first official release of acc-v) / that said, yes endpoints are a very good option for users to wish to have their laptops/desktops/non-servers discovered for both inventory and SAM/usage.

hopefully you'll update your links 🙂
