HI,
We are using CI support group to populate the assignment group on alert. We have a BR on alert table for that if no support group then one Monitoring group is assigned.

It Seems he is referring to one Default Group which May be NOC or Level 1 Group.
CMDB CI Assignment Group != NULL
Then Alert Assignment Group= CI Assignment Group
Else
Alert Assignment Group= <Your One Default Group NOC/CC in case of Alerts>
NOC- Network Operations Center/
CC - Command Center or Any group of your Choice as per your Orgs.

I was expecting that ServiceNow would automcatilly do this group asisgnment on Alert level, Do we have to write a BR for this?

I doubt its happening Automatically at ALERT Level. But in case of Incident Creation you can do in ur ALERT MANAGEMENT RULE a lookup in CMDB and Pick up CI assignment Group assuming this DATA Point is available in your Service Now System.
