ITOM - discovery tool

Hello all,

I'll start working with ITOM in couple of months, and I want to manage all computer peripherals via ITOM.

Computer peripherals - docking station, monitors, keyboard, mouse etc.

There is possible via ITOM to find all assets that connected to the PC? If yes, for how long the tool can be discover the assets?

Note: the laptops is connected to the network and using by employees.

If the laptop doesn't connected to the network over 1 month, the ITOM can still reveal the laptop?

Thanks,

Tal

Hi @Tal Moshe ,

There are many approches you can take to manage end computing devices, You can primarly make sure of Servicenow discovery to keep track of all devices and SCCM to manage all windows devices.

For devices  like Monitor, keyboard and mouse those cannot be tracked by discovery or other tools , as they are network-less devices. For these type of devices you need to manage the inventory based on asset tags and whome its currenly assigned to.

In servicenow if any devices are unused for X DAYS (OOTB 90 days) , They are considered to be in stale CIs. You can action on them accordingly. You can also create your own custom reports to keep track of unused devices and manage them accordingly.

I hope i answered your question.. kindly do the needfull...

Hi Sohail,

Thankyou for your explanation.

So, that mean if the peripherals equipment as monitors, docking stations etc. connected to by cables to the laptops the ITOM system cannot show me which assets connected to the laptop?

Nope they can't be tracked! Asset tracking during Purchase is the best way to track them.

I'm really hoping there is a more autoamted way of tracking assets in use (such as monitors).

I noticed in the 2024 Keynote, they had listed monitors tied to a person's profile. Do we know if that was something manually inputted into SN, and then manually linked to a person, or does ServiceNOW now have the ability to perform an automated coorelation from discovery (or other means) to tie that asset to a specific person (and track changes)?
