On incident form there is a configuration item field and in that field only we should populate VM's?

On incident form there is a configuration item field and in that field we should populate only VM's? In our organization CI field should be populated automatically and it is mandatory field should be filled. Few incidents are created based on VM's only and few incidents are created based non related VM's. Now my question is Configuration item field can be populated with non related VM's also? Is it a good practice?

The CI field in incident form is mostly used to specify technical assets, applications, and some other configuration item that is relevant to the incident.
So lets talk about Best Practice, In my opinion if incident is related to a VM, then it makes sense to limit the options to VMs. However, if the incident is broader and can involve non-VM CIs, the field should allow those options as well.
 Accuracy: Ensure that the CI selected accurately represents the issue to help with impact analysis, root cause identification, and reporting.
