Reports vs. Filters

I've been building out some modules and have a question.   Whats the difference between the filters to display say for instance...all unassigned incidents in 24 hours and actually creating a report to do the same thing?   Seems like with the report there's more options for sorting and means of display.(graphs, etc)   Is that really the only difference?   Just curious.   I apologize if this is a silly question.   I'm really new to this 🙂

Cheers

First, a list view offers the same sorting, filtering as a report.   It has some of the same graphing features as well (available via right click), but not quite as robust.   Second, a list view will allow you to force or expose different views for any list view.

EDIT:   The other thing I LOVE about list views is that you have access to the "Show matching / Filter Out" right click commands.   You also have access to the query breadcrumbs, which is sometimes faster than dealing with the Report's criteria builder.   Neither of these are available when presenting a report.

A report will allow you to display a set of columns that doesn't match the default set up for a given list view, since all modules of the same view will always display the same columns.

Generally using filters on list views present the information faster.   The reports provide additional formatting and control.   Reports also helps standardize how the information is presented to the individual without them changing the parameters.   In addition if you are using database views, the report is a better method to get at that data.   Many ways to present information in ServiceNow.

Ooo another thing.   As I customize a filter by adding conditions (especially via show matching / filter out commands), I can bookmark the query at any point.   I believe no matter what you do to a report, when you bookmark the report its the "baseline" that's saved, not the modifications you've made to it.

UI11 is so handy its like an extension of my body, so I exercise bookmarks vigorously.
