Store SSH Private Key on MID Server

Is there a way to store the SSH Private key on the mid-server and use that key and not the key on ServiceNow Instance?
Trying to create a very-secure environment for a isolated environment.

Thanks for your response, we did indeed use this post (Discovery Credentials: SSH Private Key) when creating the key and for trouble shooting steps and we are still not able to connect successfully. still getting the error listed above. Are there parameters that need to be set?
