Why is this SNMP classify failing?

Expecting my NEW classifier (priority 9) for RUBRIK (storage) devices to trigger on finding the value "rubrik" in sysdescr but it does not. Discovery keeps classifying these devices as appliance as I have an SNMP classifier (priority 999) that triggers on the device OID.  How can I TEST my NEW classifier, or what log might show what value the sysdescr has?

OID Classification is meant to be prioritized before criteria. I looked at the payload you provided and your sysOID is the generic Linux value, which I highly recommend turning off. Many devices have an embedded Linux OS (firewalls, cameras, security badge readers, etc.) that will all be classified into a single CI table.

Can you replace the sysdescr with sysDescr.

 

Try and let me know. Also i would suggest to go with OID as i can see the OID is assocaited with it and it will be easy to maintain.

First off, Rubrik has a plugin that can be used to collect a lot of information about Rubrik clusters and the nodes, databases, etc they back up including out of the box reports.  Secondly, there is a built in discovery of Rubrik via API calls, which likely are better than SNMP.  See https://docs.servicenow.com/en-US/bundle/tokyo-it-operations-management/page/product/service-mapping...   Finally, regarding the SNNP aspect...  so in another life I wrote monitoring software.  Basically what happened is the vendor likely was new to SNMP and didn't realize they needed to register with IANA.  Instead, they got a hold of NET-SNMP libraries and used what it had out of the box.  Of course ServiceNow got caught in the cross fire and cannot use this SysOID to make any assumptions about the responding device.  The solution for me was to use the sysDescr because though the vendor was too lazy to sign up with IANA.org for their own enterprise OID (https://www.iana.org/assignments/enterprise-numbers/enterprise-numbers) and used the Net-SNMP one out of the box, they did at least populate the sysDescr with a unique description. So instead of adding a SNMP OID and a Classifier, I simply added a SNMP Classifier based on the SysDescr. Specifically, Discovery Definitions => CI Classification => SNMP. There (in this case) I created a reference to a BarracudaDevice with a Classificiation Criteria (tab) with sysdescr contains Barracuda Email Security Gateway. NOTE: I first had to create a Baracude Email Security Gateway child class under Network Gear. A dated but still applicable YouTube video on this is - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ULRbpGOSB4 Also if you want this to show up in Changes and Incidents, not just tasks you need to add it to the Principal Class, which can be done by navigating to cmdb_class_info.LIST, create a new Class, click the drop down arrow on Class and set Principal Class to True.
