Best Practices on Retiring Knowledge Articles

In my org we are trying to clean up our existing Knowledge base which is used for both Consumer facing and IT Facing. We have a single KB for both IT & Non IT groups. 

How do we  ensure the knowledge articles we have in our repository are up to date.  Does it make sense to retire articles which are 2 years old or a combination of Articles older than 2 years + never viewed + never used. 

Are there any other best practices which we could use to ensure health of knowledge articles are in good manner.  We are probably having many articles which are old or decommissioned process. 

Any thoughts / suggestions would be highly appreciated.
