Color scheme / Theme to distinguish between different instances of ServiceNow

Ulrich Schulte

In former versions of ServiceNow I was able to adjust the color scheme / theme of different ServiceNow instances. My QA one was red, the prod one blue, the DEV instance green. So I could figure out right away in which instance I was located.

This has gone and in my profile settings I only got "default" or "dark" (which I don't like) and no colors anymore. And now constantly things happen like looking up a ticket number, "why does it not find anything?" "**bleep** I'm in the wrong system again".

Any chance to get some colors back, as it really helps a lot to prevent doing things in the wrong instance? Or any other clever idea on how to easily distinguish between different instances of ServiceNow without looking up the URL?

You still can: https://www.servicenow.com/community/next-experience-blog/next-experience-ui-converting-ui16-themes-...

Or use a browser plugin like Environment marker, so you can put a banner on the browser, depending on the URL

Hi @Ulrich Schulte ,

This feels a bit odd , i understand, but it's expected. If you have Enabled Next experience, then what you used to do earlier , now it's not possible.

However, ServiceNow has come up with some interesting features for Next Experience :

If you're on the San Diego or Tokyo release, you'll have to create a theme manually. If you're close to upgrading to Utah, we recommend continuing to use the Polaris theme if possible, and using Theme Builder once you're on Utah. Themes that were created manually in San Diego/Tokyo cannot be edited in Theme Builder as of the Utah release, so you'll have to continue editing these themes using the JSON structure once you upgrade.

We've created an article on creating your first Next Experience UI theme with steps on how to do this in San Diego and Tokyo.
If you're on Utah+ we recommend using Theme Builder, which is our new Store application to create a theme in a matter of minutes. We have a Next Experience Academy session available on YouTube so you can learn more about our new theming engine and Theme Builder, see the Create your first Next Experience UI theme article with a link to the session and more information on Theme Builder.
