I have a requirement to create a contextual search-only filter to Catalog Only instead of Catalog and Knowledge. The search source is selected to output only catalog, but I am getting KB articles too.

Are you testing on a incident ticket for example?
Then you should start by going to the incident table configuration record.
Add this link to your instance prefix: /now/nav/ui/classic/params/target/cxs_table_config_list.do
Now click on the the incident record and most likely you will see the "incident deflection" search context.
"Incident Deflection" is build to search both KB and Cat Items, but you can change the searcher to point to "Catalog only".
When you test on an incident, it will still say "Knowledge & Catalog" (because you didn't change the searcher text field) but search on just catalog items.
You are welcome to copy the "incident deflection" search context record and create your own for the incident table as well.

This is for the service portal. I changed the searcher to catalog only, I am seeing kb articles too.
