Service Now Seeking Guidance

Hello ServiceNow Community,

I am an IT Governance and Infrastructure professional with over 16 years of experience (ITIL 4, PRINCE2, and Lean Six Sigma Black Belt). My background includes managing large-scale mission-critical networks and cybersecurity GRC.

I am now looking to pivot specifically into ServiceNow Implementation. While I have deep theoretical knowledge of ITIL process design and have used ITSM tools (including BMC Helix and ServiceNow) from a leadership and audit perspective, I am struggling to find the right 'technical dimension' to master the actual implementation and configuration side.

Could the community recommend the best learning path (Now Learning, Developer Instances, or specific bootcamps) that bridges the gap between high-level process design and hands-on system implementation? I want to be able to walk into any enterprise environment and not just design the workflow, but build it.

Thank you for your guidance!"

Hi @AbdulBasitB

I’m a ServiceNow trainer and happy to share my thoughts with anyone beginning their ServiceNow journey.

ServiceNow is growing rapidly in both breadth and depth. The best way to start is by earning the CSA (Certified System Administrator) certification, which builds a solid foundation in platform fundamentals, terminology, and core modules. Once you gain hands-on experience through CSA, you can decide your next learning path.

Employers value professionals with multi-module expertise, so after completing CSA, consider exploring areas like ITSM, GRC, HRSD, CSM, or SecOps to broaden your portfolio.

Currently, the training is free, which is a great opportunity — though the real challenge lies in gaining hands-on experience. To overcome this, spend at least 1–2 hours a day engaging with the ServiceNow Community — read discussions, answer questions, and share your insights to strengthen your understanding and confidence.

If your goal is to become a developer, focus on building scripting skills using resources available on developer.servicenow.com. Regular practice will enhance your technical expertise.

Start with the CSA and then choose your direction based on your interests — whether as an Admin, Developer, Business Analyst, Change Manager, or Project Manager. A strong foundation will give you the flexibility to explore any of these paths.

Welcome to this vibrant community space where you can connect, collaborate, and grow. Share your ideas, seek guidance, and contribute to collective learning.

To take the next step, register on Now Learning and begin your ServiceNow learning journey today.

@AbdulBasitB A practical advice here, first understand how the platform works, what all capabilities the platform offers, gain hands on experience by working along with experienced professionals, enrol for the on demand courses/ instructor led trainings to gain deeper understanding of the platform. You already have a good understanding of GRC processes, see how these process are implemented via the GRC product-line in ServiceNow. Once you are through with these concepts, it will be a lot easier for you to fully transition into ServiceNow and offer end to end consultation and not just designing those workflows.

Hope this helps.

Once you are comfortable with this, explore core configuration concepts:
