Check for the workflow in Checkout tab.

You should be able to edit the WF when selected from here

Wow, that was it! I can open the the workflow from the Published tab and it shows that I have it checked out but I'm not able to edit it. When I open the same workflow from the Checked Out tab I am able to edit it. The way that's laid out is a little misleading, it's almost like it shouldn't display Checked Out Workflow records under Published. In any event, mystery solved. Thanks everyone for your help!

Hello,

Anytime you actually see the "checked out by so and so"...then that means you are looking at "another copy"...so not the real thing. This happens a lot if you're impersonating people as you're testing stuff, etc.

You'd want to close that workflow, then go to "Checked out" and open it from there. If you open it from the global list of workflows, you aren't opening the actual version that's checked out and so you'll see the text at the top there.

I have seen this where you may be attempting to edit the wrong version of the workflow.  Sometimes the workflow editor may now take you to the checked out version of the workflow and may take you to the published version which is read only instead.  Try:

  • Navigate to Workflow \ Administration \ Workflow Versions
  • Search where name = your workflow
  • Find the one that published is false and checked out by you and open it by clicking the Name column
  • Under related links, click Show Workflow
  • Hopefully the workflow is editable now
