Why can we not add Business Applications to Enterprise Portfolios in DPM?

In Digital Portfolio Management (DPM) you can create a personal portfolio that can include Business Applications, Services/Offerings, and Application Services.

But you cannot include Business Applications when creating an Enterprise Portfolio, built on Service Portfolio Management.

Is the ability to add Business Applications to Enterprise Portfolios going to be addressed in a future release of SPM/DPM? If not, can it explained why they should be different?

I had hoped to create enterprise portfolio for IT management that they can share with their staff but it would not include the all important Business Applications.

Thanks, Bruce...

Hi Bruce,

Thanks so much for sharing the feedback! We are currently exploring this feature and are hoping to get a bit more information - is your hope that you would be able to create a portfolio that is a combination of services and apps? Or, are you hoping to create a portfolio of services and another portfolio of apps?

As you already know based on your question, the Enterprise Portfolio module shows service portfolios built in Service Portfolio Management. Because DPM is a replacement for Service Owner Workspace, it was imperative we include service portfolios in DPM. We are exploring how we can surface portfolios for business applications that provides the right information for application owners. Any use cases and key requirements you can share would be so helpful.

Thanks so much!

Caitlin

Hi Caitlin,

We are not using Service Portfolio Management and currently have no plans to create portfolios as a way to group our services. What I want to do is create a view that contains a mix of services and applications for each IT staff member that reports to our CIO. I would like to create this view using a query for each object type as we set the IT staff owner using an existing property, though not Owned By or Managed By.

I thought about impersonating each IT staff member and creating a personal portfolio for them in DPM but that is a LOT of work to manually select all of the apps and services and it's not manageable as we continue to add and remove items. If a personal portfolio was query-based that would be great.

I think my best solution is to not use DPM but create some reports and dashboards that are query based as that will them the full visibility of everything they are responsible for.

Thanks, Bruce...

Hi Bruce,

While you could create personal portfolios and share them with groups, that wouldn't solve your problem of the changing face of your apps and services.

Another option would be to add lists that do this for you in the DPM Workspace.

You can install the Enterprise Portfolio plug-in and create "Business Application" portfolios - but - not yet any combo of services and applications.  If we use DPM, we will need to set up two different Enterprise Portfolio structures - or encourage people to create Personal Portfolios.
