Do attachments of knowledge articles get removed when a new version of an article is created?

We have recently discovered some of our knowledge articles have lost their attachments. We are trying to figure out why.
A couple months ago, we purged our incidents. Many of those incidents had articles attached. Those articles may have had attachments as well. Is it possible the purging of the incidents somehow removed the attachment from the knowledge article?

Hi there,
When creating a new article version, out-of-the-box the attachments stay in the instance, in the attachment table, attached to the previous knowledge article versions. In fact, the attachments are copied over to the new article version.
You do mention something else in your description, opposed to your title. And that is DELETING incidents. I don't know how you deleted them, though perhaps you did this with cascade delete on the knowledge articles?
