How to update "Text index" field on kb_knowledge to apply it to ALL tables that extend it

I am testing creating a custom KB Article Template and after creation, I get the below alert after created.

Alert = "the u_kb_template_test_template extendsd the kb_knowledge table. Please update "Text index" field on kb_knowledge to apply it to ALL tables that extend it.

Is someone able to provide some direction on this?

I feel I need to complete this action so my new article template fields on the u_kb_template table will carry over when I create a new article using a custom article template.

I look forward to the amazing responses that I know I'll be getting.

This is a standard platform alert and completing it is good practice, though it won't affect whether your template fields carry over to new articles — those are separate concerns.

To resolve the alert:

  1. Navigate to System Definition > Text Indexes
  2. Find the text index for kb_knowledge
  3. Open it and click Update all table indexes (or the equivalent button on the record — the label varies slightly by release)

This ensures any new fields you've added to your custom template table are included in full-text search across all tables that extend kb_knowledge.

Hi @kdelbridge

  • Navigate to System Definition > Text Indexes in your ServiceNow application navigator.
  • Search for and open the text index record for the kb_knowledge table.
  • Click on the Regenerate Text Index
