Biomedical Equipment

Good morning community,

I have a customer who is in the biomedical industry and is manufacturing devices. They want to migrate there "device list" into a proper CMDB.

The basic idea is to put this into any of the OT class, on the other hand it's biomedical equipment, where OT isn't fully fitting and the medical device classes have been somehow reworked with Vancouver I just found out (e.g. cmdb_ci_medical is deprecated).

Anyone any opinion on the matter? This isn't a question of being wrong or right, but more on the strategy that ServiceNow has in the area.

Any reply welcome

Best regards,

Frank

Hi,

Please check out the (new) Healthcare Devices [cmdb_ci_hc_device] class. You will need to load the latest version of CMDB CI Class Models from the ServiceNow Store to get this.

Hi @Chris McDevitt

thanks I try now to find the best fit to avoid to have to many custom fields.

E.g. they have things like Netbios Active on Device (Yes/No) or if a device is domain joined or not and plenty of things to control security setting on the devices (which you can't discover).

But many thanks for the effort taken.

Hi @Chris McDevitt

thanks I try now to find the best fit to avoid to have to many custom fields.

Can you share more about their Use Case?

And to your excellent points, the customer wants to collect:

  • Netbios Active on Device?
  • Domain joined?
  • Security settings X on a Device set?

These are best handled by:

  • A Configuration Compliance tool (and / or)
  • Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)  /configuration management tools

When thinking about new CMDB fields:

  • Avoid adding new fields that need to be manually maintained
  • Ask if this data would be better suited to another tool

If you decide the data needs to live in the CMDB:

  • Add the new field as close as possible to the Class that needs it.
    • You may want to consider a parent Class IF all of it's Children Classes will use it.

@Community Alums  and... can you please elaborate on the use cases for your customer?

Hi @Chris McDevitt,

sure, here a sample device so you can take a look. About what we are taking, they are used either used in labs for analytics or for production of something I couldn't explain (just a ServiceNow addicted, no clue about biomedicin).

Usually those devices are controlled by a "normal" PC. Normal is in brackets, because their is a wide range. Sometimes it's a tablet delivered by the vendor or machines with Windows 7 (no joke) which are even sometimes integrated in special networks. Also the vendor has sometimes remote access to the devices for support and maintenance.

Sometimes this devices are Linux machines and sometimes they are blackboxes connected to the Internet via some firewall, but not technical details are really known.

Also things like clean room, remote access via Teamviewer, Netbios, GxP, Quality controled, Service Account, USB Adapter and many more of this kind of information is managed.

And even if you have an normal office machine of the customer, the question is if I should sort it into the OT or medical class, because it's a very strict controled envoirement (which I could via a relation).

My current conclusing, we will put everything under OT and extend classes and tables where needed.

Best regards,
