Data Visulaization and catalog variable reporting

We are currently limited to basic Data Visualizations for reporting. Accessing and importing ServiceNow Catalog Variables remains a challenge, as the current process is technically difficult and restricted to a few users. 

What is the best practice for including catalog variables in reports? Additionally, which specific role is required to allow users to dot-walk to variables within the Report Designer

Many customers are already moving towards Platform analytics dashboard

it's supported to add RITM variables
