A hypothetical situation. An asset is in the lifecycle stage/status "Operational/In Use" or "Inventory/Available". An audit is performed and the asset cannot be found.
This will trigger an investigation to do a more thorough search and determine if it can be found, was actually stolen, or is just lost. The investigation may take days or weeks.
While the investigation is underway, what stage/status should the asset be placed in (best practice)?
With the caveat that it would be good to be able to differentiate these assets when reporting on assets in stock, in use, or already investigated and written off (if needed). I.e., these assets should still be on the books until the investigation is concluded, but we also want to make it clear that we currently don't have line of sight into their whereabouts.

Hi @M_A_Jones,
based on the CSDM model and the available lifecycle combinations, I would choose „Inventory | Quarantine“. Another option could be a dedicated location and assign the Asset/CI to it. In both cases the reporting should be no problem.
Best, Dennis

Thanks @dreinhardt - are the CSDM Lifecycle state transitions prescriptive? I.e., is it legal to go from "Inventory|Quarantine" directly to "Missing|Stolen", or would we need to go through the "Deploy" & "Operational" states first to get to "Missing|Stolen". I assume the former would be ok, so this solution would seem to be good (as long as you're not using Quarantine to mean anything other than the asset is being investigated). I also assume the little 'CI' in the corner of the quarantine status does not mean it only applies to CI and not asset records?
The specific "unkown" location idea for assets under investigation seems pretty clean as well. Would be interested to know if that is generally what would be considered a best practice, or a common solution? I could see doing both - setting the asset location to "unknown" and the related CI State/Status to "Inventory|Quarantine" while the investigation is underway. Thanks again.
