Consuming and assigning Assets to physical Desks

So, looking at best way to assign assets to desks in the situation where you might have hot desking or where assets are just not assigned to a user.

So, let's say monitors (hardware Asset) that we asset, i don't want to assign to the user as the user might move desks around the office. or just keyboards and cameras which should stay on the desk and if a staff member leaves the desk should be setup ready to go when the next person starts.
Having assets assigned to a desk means we could easily check using a report, which means we can see what desks have what stock and during stock take around the office we can work out if stock levels etc.

I have setup Desks as facility assets (alm_facility) which seemed right to me, it's not hardware or anything and don't want 100's of desks showing up in my asset list.

For hardware assets, i have created a field onto the form that references the alm_facility table to show all the options for desks, then we can link hardware and desks in theory, like parent and child assets (which is what I'm basically trying to do)

only issue is that when i consume a consumable, it will let me assign it to a user or a hardware asset, was thinking i could add another reference field for Desk under asset or user which references alm_facility just like the hardware option but not sure if i have the skills to change the UI Action.
Anyone know if i can just change the option for consuming/assigning an asset to an asset that isn't hardware?

Or should i just make the desks under the alm_hardware table?

Thanks
