Softwares CMDB Architecture

Hi,

We are currently migrating to ServiceNow and the person in charge of the CMDB migration designed the Software CMDB in a certain way. I am having doubts if it fllows the best practices or not.

The licenses assets have been created this way:

- One record per software/product

- The quantity in the record is 1

- The actual quantities are in the field "Active rights"

I feel like there is something odd as the Assigned Field is supposed to be a unique user. Should it be x records depending on the quantities of licenses so we can properly assign them to each user?

What are the best practices in terms of CMDB architecture?

That 'person in charge', is that a consultant from a ServiceNow partner or someone from your company that did this before in another system and is now doing it in ServiceNow without knowing the platform?

What did he/she say when you asked these questions? Where they able to explain it to you?

You are now asking thousands of people to tell you something, without you knowing them. You can get around the table with this person to explain your concerns and have them explain the 'why' to you, where you don't take answers like 'because that's how I do it' or 'that's what it's supposed to be' for granted. Those need to be proven. You say it's not logical, but maybe it is, from the requirements coming from your company (because in ServiceNow there often is more than 1 solution and the requirements define the best one).

What is your role in this that you are giving us your doubts and not the person responsible for it?

Hi @SélimS,

you can add one entitlement e.g., with 25 active use rights and it is not required to add a entitlement record for each user to assign it. Based on the metric (e.g., Per User) a tab called "User Allocations" is available and you can add all users allowed to consume the license.
