Best Practice: Knowledge Categories

I was told previously that best practice is to limit the number of top-level categories to 3 (subcategories are unlimited). I don't see any documentation around that so I'm wondering if that is (still) accurate.

Where possible, I aim to eliminate categories completely. Ain't nobody in the world who wants to browse through a taxonomy to find knowledge on a service portal, especially if you have anything close to unlimited subcategories.
Tag your knowledge articles, use Text Analytics, and #$%& category trees. Rely on search for users to find articles.
