Best Practices/Tips for Updating Service Catalog

We have been using ServiceNow for about a year and a half. We have request, incident and change. I'm wanting to revamp the service catalog (request) and update it to become more standard. When it was originally setup almost everything was set up with variables.

We have what we call Product Families and Products in ServiceNow as part of our CMDB. I'm wanting to pull these into the Service Catalog and make them new request and phase out some of the other ones that are based all on variables.

Can any one direct me to links about best practices? What about the Item Designer? I've found it but have no experience with it and am not sure where to start or if I should even use it at all.
