How does a web proxy server work with ServiceNow?

I'm trying to understand proxy servers and servicenow.

I stumbled on this page around setting up a basic proxy setup

If I set these variables, what will happen when I navigate to my instance? How will the traffic flow?

I've not had any experience of this, but I think these variables would be used by the instance to connect outbound to the internet.

If your instance is cloud-based (i.e. normal configuration), then you don't need to configure these properties. They look like they would be relevant if you have an on-prem instance. In this case, these properties would instruct the on-prem instance how to connect to the internet via your company's proxy.
