How to knowledge nav-ons work?

I have a few active knowledge nav-ons including Microsoft and Google. How do these work?
When I type "Microsoft Word" in the knowledge search bar I'd expect a lot of results if it's searching Microsoft. I don't see a way on the knowledge page to determine what I want to search with.
We are running Helsinki,

I have added few add ons but seems like we can't see them anywhere in the Knowledge either in Self Service or Service Desk etc.
May be deprecated as mguy says.

Hi Stig,
this is documented for the Kingston release here: Automatic changes after KMv3 migration and for Jakarta here: Automatic changes after KMv3 migration . The keyword is still "legacy". This functionality remains available if you use the legacy Knowledge home "kb_home.do" instead of the newer "$knowledge.do".
I hope that this clarifies your doubts.
