Is anyone using Knowledge Ownership groups, what are your non technical pros/cons and is there any alternative?

We currently are in a state where we don't have owners on articles and are not able to edit. We need to set ownership of each article.
What have you found as far as pro/cons/gotchas with setup of ownership groups?

Any recommendations on selecting groups, can you use assignment group?

If we choose not to use ownership groups is there an alternative?

Thank you.

It is a great feature and specifically for this purpose only to manage or create new ownership groups, so you should definitely go for it.

And yes there are alternatives. You can use the good old assignment group(sys_user_group) and over there in the 'type' field select knowledge.
Note: If the Type field does not appear on the form, configure the form layout to add it.

In the Manager field, select the manager and add the role knowledge_group_manager. Lastly, in the Roles related list, click Edit and add the role knowledge_group_member to the group.

Pls mark my answer helpful/correct if it helped you in any way. Thanks.

We currently are on Knowledge V. 3 and moving to Advanced Plug in (soon I hope). We too use the good old assignment groups and call them Document Owners in Knowledge, but want to move to OOB Group Ownership. If you are already using groups you can't reuse assignment names across types. If a group is already assigned to type ITIL or type catalog, you must create a new name for type Knowledge. We're going to preface our group names with SNK (our TLA). Using groups means you can move people away from the philosophy that the author owns the knowledge to THE GROUP owns the knowledge. I want our teams to involve more of their members in the process and this helps.

As a new knowledge manager, inherited over 5,000 expired articles and had no idea who the articles belonged to as the owner of all the articles was the prior knowledge manager due to the way the install vendor loaded knowledge during our ServiceNow implementation.

Yes, Ownership groups for knowledge articles is great.   Was in a hurry to get support from the whole enterprise, instead of creating new ownership groups for knowledge used the same groups we use for change approvals as they would be the same section leads to provide the content approval.   As people advance and retire having the ownership group is wonderful to know who to contact.     Another pro is security approval workflow the ownership group allows.
