Being a ServiceNow trainer, I am happy to share my thoughts before I start. One important point is that ServiceNow is becoming broader, deeper, and more complex. This means developers also need to continuously enhance their skills and build a broader portfolio to remain competitive in the ecosystem.

To start your ServiceNow journey, I assume you already have a basic understanding of the platform. If not, the Certified System Administrator (CSA) learning path is the best place to begin. The CSA is the fundamental starting point for anyone entering the ServiceNow ecosystem.

You can complete the CSA training through Now Learning, where you will learn about the ServiceNow platform, its key components, and the fundamental concepts needed to build a strong foundation.

Once you complete the CSA learning path, the next step is to move towards development.

ServiceNow has a dedicated learning path for developers, which will help you understand the development concepts and tools available on the platform.

For a developer, JavaScript is one of the most important skills to learn, as it is the foundation for much of ServiceNow development. I would recommend learning JavaScript alongside your ServiceNow development journey.

You can then start with the following progression:

• CSA and ServiceNow platform fundamentals

• JavaScript fundamentals

• ServiceNow development

• Junior Developer

• Senior Developer

• Technical Architect / Solution Architect

This is a general journey, and the exact path may vary depending on your experience and interests. However, the key is to continue building practical experience, expanding your technical skills, and developing a strong portfolio across the wider ServiceNow ecosystem.

1. Spend at least 1–2 hours daily on the ServiceNow Community. Observe the kinds of technical questions being asked and how experienced members respond. You’ll learn a lot passively this way—and I highly encourage you to start answering questions as well. Explaining concepts to others will improve your technical thinking and deepen your understanding.

1. ServiceNow Administration (CSA)—Start with the System Administrator learning path and prepare for the CSA certification. Learn users, groups, tables, forms, lists, security, notifications, update sets, and platform fundamentals.

2. Scripting – Spend time learning JavaScript along with ServiceNow scripting concepts like Client Scripts, Business Rules, Script Includes, GlideRecord, GlideAjax, UI Actions, and Flow Designer. Strong scripting skills are expected in most ServiceNow roles.

3. ITSM Fundamentals – Get hands-on with Incident, Problem, Change, Knowledge, Service Catalog, and Request Management. These are the most commonly used modules in real-world projects.

4. Build on a Personal Developer Instance (PDI) – Create your own applications and implement real-world use cases instead of only following tutorials. Practical experience is what interviewers often look for.

5. Learn Integrations and Automation – Explore REST APIs, Import Sets, Transform Maps, IntegrationHub, and Flow Designer, as these are widely used in projects.

6. Practice Interview Scenarios – Understand common ServiceNow interview questions and be prepared to explain the logic behind your implementations.

Once you're comfortable with the above, you can specialize in modules like HRSD, CSM, GRC, ITOM, or AI-powered capabilities such as Now Assist, depending on your career interests and market demand.
